How can having a driver’s license be beneficial:

• Licensing also helps ensure that drivers are insured, which benefits everyone on the road in case of accidents.

4. Protection Against Legal Risks

• Driving without a license can lead to fines, impoundment of vehicles, or even legal complications, which can have severe consequences for undocumented immigrants. Having a license reduces the risk of such encounters.

States That Allow Undocumented Immigrants to Obtain a Driver’s License

In many states, undocumented immigrants face barriers to obtaining a driver’s license due to restrictive laws or policies. However, several states have introduced laws allowing undocumented immigrants to apply for driver’s licenses or permits, recognizing the importance of providing this essential tool for safety, mobility, and equality.

As of October 1, 2023, 19 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico allow some or all undocumented immigrants to get a driver's license. These states include:
