Considering location is crucial due to various factors:

  • Proximity to Home:

    • Reduces travel expenses, which is essential for students with financial constraints.

    • Allows students to remain close to family, providing emotional support and stability.

  • State Policies:

    • Some states, particularly sanctuary states, offer inclusive policies such as in-state tuition and access to financial aid. These policies can significantly ease the financial burden of higher education for undocumented students.

    • Certain locations have more resources, advocacy organizations, and community support tailored to undocumented students. These environments foster academic and personal growth.

What are sanctuary states/cities?

In general, Sanctuary states are states in the United States that have adopted policies to limit their cooperation with federal immigration enforcement agencies, particularly regarding the identification and deportation of undocumented immigrants unless it involves investigation of a serious crime.

Key Features of Sanctuary States:

  • Limited Cooperation with ICE: State and local law enforcement agencies often do not detain individuals solely based on their immigration status or comply with federal requests to hold individuals for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

  • Access to Public Services: Undocumented residents may have access to public services such as education, healthcare, and, in some cases, driver's licenses.

  • Inclusive Higher Education Policies: Many sanctuary states allow undocumented students to qualify for in-state tuition and state financial aid for college, making higher education more accessible and affordable.

  • As of March 2021, the following states claim sanctuary status:

    • California

    • Colorado

    • Connecticut

    • Illinois

    • Massachusetts

    • New Jersey

    • New Mexico

    • New York

    • Oregon

    • Vermont

    • Washington

  • States that prohibit undocumented students from attending their state universities.

    • Alabama

    • South Carolina
