Medi-Cal

California is expanding healthcare access to all low-income residents, including undocumented immigrants, through the Medi-Cal program. Starting January 1, 2024, undocumented adults of all ages, who meet income requirements, became eligible for full-scope Medi-Cal, making California the first state to offer this comprehensive coverage.


Eligibility: Undocumented immigrants must still meet Medi-Cal's income eligibility requirements, which are generally up to 138% of the Federal Poverty Level for adults

Note: Beginning in 2026 would no longer accept new enrollees 19 and older who lack permanent legal status.

Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP)

Health insurance plan for children under 19 who don't qualify for Medicaid, essentially providing low-cost or free healthcare coverage depending on family income

Eligibility: Children under 19 years old 

Services: Includes hospital visits, emergency care, lab tests, prescription drugs, dental, vision, and more

Prenatal Care Assistance Program

Healthcare provider program designed to provide low-income pregnant women with access to affordable or free prenatal medical care

Services: Routine checkups, lab tests, specialist consultations, and delivery services

Eligibility: Typically based on income level, falling below a certain percentage of the federal poverty line.

Emergency Medicaid

Emergency Medicaid (EM) is a program that provides medical coverage for uninsured individuals who have experienced a medical emergency. It's available to people who don't qualify for Medicaid due to their immigration status.

Services: Medical care and services for serious health issues that require immediate medical attention. Conditions like heart attacks, severe pain, and labor and delivery


California Victim Compensation Program

Eligibility: If you live in California and have been a victim of a crime, you may qualify for free mental health services through the California Victim Compensation Program (CalVCB).
