Note that Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) and Prenatal Care are not available to undocumented children and pregnant women.

Emergency Medical Care

Hospitals must provide emergency treatment under the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA), and Virginia offers reimbursement for specific emergency services for non-citizens that are low income

FAMIS Prenatal Coverage

This program offers full coverage for pregnant women who do not meet immigration status rules for other coverage. You now do not need to meet immigration status rules, provide immigration documents, or have a Social Security number to be eligible for FAMIS Prenatal Coverage. You do need to provide the estimated date of your delivery and how many children you are expecting, live in Virginia, meet income rules, and be uninsured. Your coverage will continue for 60 days after the birth.
